Learn How FASEB is Supporting SSR and Your Research!
Report from Diane Duffy, SSR’s representative to the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Board of Directors
What is FASEB doing for you?
Here are a few initiatives where FASEB is supporting SSR and your research!
Legislative: FASEB strongly supports increased funding for NIH, NSF, USDA, and other research agencies. I and other FASEB representatives recently participated in a virtual Capitol Hill Day to bring our request to lawmakers, talk about research discoveries, and discuss the added value that research dollars bring to our communities. FASEB also recommended changes to pending legislation intended to strengthen U.S. scientific competitiveness.
DEAI: FASEB has significantly enhanced its activities in the area of diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion (DEAI). The DEAI Committee is working to improve diversity at FASEB and recommend best practices for FASEB member societies, like SSR. FASEB has committed $1.5M and brought new staff on board to implement exciting new activities. FASEB is developing an innovative program to enhance DEAI among researchers with grants to provide care for family members so a caregiver/researcher can participate in professional development activities. These family care awards will be at $5,000 per awardee, twice that offered by NIH! FASEB DEAI will also be promoting Reverse Mentoring to broaden perspectives of both junior and senior individuals within the research community.
OneHealth: This initiative will engage multidisciplinary scientists to improve understanding of the interconnections between the health of the environment, plants, animals, and humans. This initiative has been ongoing since 2019. Currently, a Task Force is busy with setting priorities and developing a budget for OneHealth initiatives. This initiative is led by Dr. Patricia Morris, current President of the FASEB Board of Directors and SSR’s representative to the FASEB Board of Directors 2010-2019.
DataWorks!: FASEB has teamed up with NIH and other stakeholders to develop best policies and practices for data sharing and management. FASEB has committed $1.5M for this new initiative to assist investigators with data management planning (DMP) per federal agency proposal requirements. FASEB will be hosting workshops, conversations, sponsoring DMP re-use prizes for sharing plans, and creating a help desk to assist researchers. FASEB’s efforts on behalf of its member societies aligns with the new NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing that will go into effect in 2023.
